Motivation and team building is something that not just the British are particularly poor at.
There is a management to staff tradition of “social barriers” all be them these days un-written that. “the boss is a Bast….?” , “I am only here for the money”, “ I am entitled to take a day offsick when I like”, “why should we work hard when the boss earns all the money” these are some of the common statements you capture when visiting any business globally – the only difference being the language and the regional accent used to portray the familiar story.
Many incorrectly believe that bonding sessions are the way to tackle motivation in the workplace. Reality is during any “bonding session” typically 1/3 of attendees feel insulted by the session, 1/3 feel indifferent and only at best 1/3 feel they have gained any benefit. The fact is that the 1/3 that feel insulted will become less motivated and this more than counteracts the benefit that the 1/3 that gained something! That is all unless you get to the route problems first:
We strongly believe that motivation in the workplace is best tackled through education right from the grass roots – this is a more challenging approach as it does require us winning the confidence of both management and staff and then educating each party as to the true feelings that each has for the other.
We will say no more at this stage, other than the results are often rather shocking – however, the improvement that results can be resounding. Unfortunately, the only way to find out is by trying – this is a true case of “nothing ventured nothing gained”
