The company’s founder, Mr Brian M Back, a 1st Class Honours Graduate in Electronic Engineering Design and Production, a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Fellow of the Institute of Engineering Technology (FIET), started his engineering career in the high voltage (HV) power industry, spending his first decade with Hawker Siddley Power Transformers working in both design and development environments.
During this period he helped to pioneer advanced detection apparatus for the location of partial discharges in energised power transformers and in doing so won the prestigious 1987 Institution prize, awarded by the then IEE (now IET). In 1987 he moved out of power into the electronics industry working for a succession of small businesses involved in the design and management of various facilities involved in ultrasonic sensor based instrumentation and the then emerging wireless technology, the latter in particular low power radio.
In 1993 whilst working as a University Lecturer he founded Radio-Tech Limited, a company that went on to take sensors, micro-control, micro-power and wireless communications to a new extreme of integration, yet highly flexible enabling them to be used to serve a wide range of applications from automatic meter reading through to railway temperature monitoring. Versions were even developed and certified to the then new ATEX Directive. In parallel to these developments he also pioneered the concept of “splitting the SIM” with regards to digital cellular communications.
Up until this period many of the major cellular communications companies had prophesised incorrectly that each and every home appliance and gadget would have a SIM card and would hence communicate over the cellular network. Radio-Tech’s leading solution was to develop as early as 2002 what is now commonly known as the “cellular data concentrator” or “hybrid wireless”– a wireless to cellular gateway that permitted tens or even thousands of wireless devices to share a single SIM card. This hybrid wireless combination of integrated sensor/transmitters achieved battery lives measured in decades and the cellular data concentrators went on to be used in some of Europe’s most challenging remote monitoring projects.
In 2003, Radio-Tech won a contract to design and develop a real time rail temperature monitoring system called the RTM. This went on to win the Railway Industries Innovation Award in 2006. In parallel in 2004 a contract to supply what remains to this day Europe’s largest fixed network, wide area, automatic meter reading system was won and installed on the Left bank of the city of Paris France. The success that Radio-Tech was having with its unique brand of technology soon brought it to the attention of the press and a number of trade suitors. This resulted in the acquisition of Radio-Tech by Halma plc in August 2005.
Subsequent to all of this Mr Back was responsible for the worlds first real time wireless train axel box temperature monitoring system - now installed on the Gatwick Express fleet. Also the development of the first low cost Smart Data Logger called the Smart Log - a device that converts a legacy water, gas or electricity meter into a SMART meter. The latter also complimented with a unique solar powered in house wireless display called the Smart View.
Now independent, Mr Back wishes to impart via Euro Technology Services Limited the spirit of innovation and the potential for wealth creation that it brings to businesses and individuals alike.
